Jiu-Jitsu started as a way for our family to do something together. It has grown into a sport and activity that i love.

As a mom with 4 growing boys, having a way to connect with them on and off the mat has been vital to our growth.

Jiu-jitsu has given me the extra self-confidence, that I didn’t know i wanted.

Empowering other women and teaching them the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu / Self Defense is how I can pay it forward and help keep women safe from harm.

I am grateful for the opportunity to coach the women’s class at Phantom Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

What is the Women's Class all about?

Jiu-jitsu is for everyone, young and old, male and female. Getting started on this life journey can be intimidating for anyone, but the hardest thing to do in jiu-jitsu is to take those first steps. The purpose of this short overview is to give you some peace of mind about the decision to put on that gi for the first time and join us. Over the years, several women have expressed an interest in our classes, but some have shared concerns. For example, upon first glance, jiu-jitsu can appear to be aggressive in nature. As an observer, watching 220 lb men holding each other on the ground seems intimidating to some women who are either concerned that they will be injured by this or that they personally don't yet have the strength to hold their partners at bay. What you will find on the mat, however, is that jiu-jitsu is actually (and literally, in fact) a gentle art. This martial art is centered on technique, versus brute force. In addition, at Phantom, we prioritize taking care of our partners and ensuring physical and emotional safety in every class. This is the primary reason that we are now offering a women's' only course. Our plan is to implement a specific curriculum that introduces women to the essential components of jiu-jitsu, in a non-competitive, learner-focused environment.

Basic FAQ

What's different about the women's class?

Well, to begin with, all of the students in the class are women! You will be working with and alongside other women who are on the same journey as you.  Also, this class has a deliberate self-defense theme that addresses the specific needs that women encounter. Even better, the first 2 lessons are free to any and every woman you know!

Can I also attend the general class?

The main difference between male and female practitioners is the average weight of the person. As you develop the skills of framing to keep a heavier opponent's weight off you, the difference becomes less of an issue.  Each person develops those skills at a different pace, but we have found that a year is a safe estimate. Because of this, we ask that women stay in the women's class for one year before attending the coed class. Unless you have previous experience in BJJ.

What should I wear for my first class?

All you really need for your first class is comfortable clothing that is free from metal buttons or zippers. Sweat pants, yoga pants, board shorts, or something similar will work just fine. If you already own a martial arts Gi, you are welcome to wear that until you are ready to buy a jiu-jitsu kimono.

Do I need to be in shape?

Absolutely not. We have students at all fitness levels and encourage you to work at a pace that is suitable for you. We will help you get into shape, even if you haven't been active in many years.

Do I need prior experience?

You do not. We will teach you everything you need to know, starting with foundational skills.

I'm ready! When and where can I do this?

The women's class is at the Maple Valley location on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 7:15 pm to 8:45 pm
