Jiu-Jitsu started as a way for our family to do something together. It has grown into a sport and activity that i love.

As a mom with 4 growing boys, having a way to connect with them on and off the mat has been vital to our growth.

Jiu-jitsu has given me the extra self-confidence, that I didn’t know i wanted.

Empowering other women and teaching them the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu / Self Defense is how I can pay it forward and help keep women safe from harm.

I am grateful for the opportunity to coach the women’s class at Phantom Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Gene Hawks

Assistant Instructor Brown Belt

May of 2012, one year after his kids started training Gene Hawks started his Jiu Jitsu journey.

Gene started training at Gracie Jiu Jitsu in Tampa Florida under Professor Rob Kahn, then under Chris Rodriguez, and Dan Martinez. At Gracie Tampa

Gene spent his first three and a half years practicing NOGI Jiu Jitsu, American kickboxing, and Muay Thai.

In 2015 Gene moved to the Maple Valley area, within two months put on his first Gi and started training at Phantom Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Over the years Gene has evolved from a purely NOGI BJJ style to a mix game of gi setups and no gi submissions.

Gene’s game is a mixture of heavy top pressure, with a passion for knee bars, ankle locks, head/arm and darce chokes.

Genes loves to help the new students not only understand the fundamentals of Jiu Jitsu techniques but, most importantly, the strategy to best implement a technique or series of them. To Gene, the camaraderie, teamwork, and family aspect of Jiu Jitsu is what, not only drew him in, but keeps him passionate about jiu jitsu and his Phantom Family!
